ARTIST BIO
Jonathan was born in El Cajon, California, but lived most of his life in West Texas. At a very young age, Jonathan discovered the knack of observation, and representation of the human race. He soon fell in love with stories and entertainment, in which he knew he had to be apart of the creative world. Jonathan is a recent graduate of New York University with a Bachelor of Fine Arts, in theatre (Experimental Theatre Wing). The Experimental Theatre Wing taught Jonathan valuable lessons in creating original work and developing the artist as a whole. He has trained and collaborated with Catherine Coray, Karmenlara Ely, Muriel Miguel, and Rosemary Quinn. He has also created work with Martha Tornay, John Kinzel, and KJ Holmes.
Jonathan grew up in a bi-racial family, his father being Skidi-Pawnee, while his mother was white. His father was a Baptist Preacher, and at a very young age they moved to Moapa, Nevada to be missionaries on the Paiutes Reservation. A Pawnee Baptist Preacher speaking to Paiutes about Christianity is what Jonathan would call his first challenge in the Native community. Also, he found a loss for community because being biracial he was not enough of each race to be included in one or the other. Jonathan discusses these blurred lines for his generation about being Native, where we cross them, and how one deals with the labels we assign ourselves. He questions "Nativeness," what does it mean and how does our generation deal with that concept? Jonathan is 100% dedicated to his craft, and his ready to learn more about his people. He is passionate about what he does and is constantly searching for new ways to learn and grow.
