ARTIST BIO
An American Indian soulful singer blends the classic sounds of Jazz with the earthiness of the Blues and delivers it with a prolific storytelling ending. Born and raised in the Chicago area, the youngest of seven brothers and five sisters, Starlight was musically influenced by great artists like Mahalia Jackson, Billiie Holliday, Ma Rainey and Nina Simone. Later, she took her talents to the east coast and more recently, New York City.
Her training began at the age of six, when she crooned in a church choir with her siblings. Her discipline continued through high school and into college where she met and was taken in by the esteemed musical director, Lanny Wolfe. (Mr. Wolfe is noted for "More Than Wonderful," a Dove Award recipient which he wrote and was performed by Sandi Patti.) Mr. Wolfe, primarily a gospel composer, chose to work closely with Starlight during her studies at Jackson School of Music in Jackson, Mississippi. She joined Mr. Wolfe in a traveling chorale of recorded performers and later, she toured the Southern Belt with the Lanny Wolfe Trio.
This young and very beautiful vocalist blends a smooth melodic voice with a powerful soul wrenching sound that is unique within the field of musical performance. Audiences are first struck by the dazzling and exotic appearance of this Cherokee-Aztec Indian and are then mesmerized by her unforgettable vocal talents. Starlight has thrilled and delighted a myriad of audiences from Sweetwaters to the Village Gate to Basilico and on to various clubs in Harlem. "I was truly moved", is but a small example of what audiences have revealed upon hearing Starlight Tyler perform.
Starlight also holds a special place in her heart for young children and especially those less fortunate. Accordingly, she has loaned her talents to numerous benefits aiding underprivileged children, most recently performing on behalf of “Hip For Kids”. This live performance was held on the grounds of historic Marcus Garvey Park in East Harlem as a featured part of The Big Apple Harvest in 2003.
Currently Starlight Tyler is touring her first CD. Created by producer, Ben Haile from the legendary "Thunder Bird Sisters". This storytelling album features the "Thunder Bird Sisters" as Ms. Tyler's back up vocals which is a bit of a role reversal from when Starlight gladly lent her vocal skills as the Thunder Bird Sisters back up vocals. The company musicians that have banned together, and perform live on the east coast together consist of lead guitar played by Brian LeClerk, rhythm guitar played by Paule Ortegosa, and percussions by Alex Sarkis all local artist from Eastern Long Island who write and perform regularly.
Starlight Tyler & Company perform regularly in the NYC area. Future project are now including the effortless direction of Jazz extraordinaire Mark Ledford, who also coaches Ms. Tyler vocally, along with Kenny "Flav" Dickerson, an up and coming producer whose most recent productions include the great talents of Queen Latifah, Mary J Blige, Busta Rymes, and other accomplished artist. Furthermore, Starlight's latest work, her first CD titled "Our Begginings" is currently being considered for a Native American Music Award nomination for best new artist.
