ARTIST BIO
Jason, a Cherokee born in the Bronx, never recognized himself as an American Indian because he was raised in an urban environment and saw stereotyping of Indians everywhere but gratefully because of his strong Cherokee family, he is proud of his heritage today.
Jason first stated creating works of leather in the late 80's being involved with the Native American education program, currently unavailable, in New York City school system. Projects were giving to him by Native American teachers to make traditional native garb for students themselves. He would first start out small then build up to larger more complex leather works.
During the 15 years Jason has been creating leatherwork. His work has been worn by many dancers and singers in powwow circuit.
His work includes leggings,
shields, drums, moccasins, dream catchers and medicine bags. Leather
works with thick hides of leather such as raw hide (shields) become
more involved because he paints them as well. Jason's sister
Carese Gullo and mother Deborah Mullins are both on the roster.
