ARTIST BIO

Jason, a Cherokee born in the Bronx, never recognized himself as an American Indian because he was raised in an urban environment and saw stereotyping of Indians everywhere but gratefully because of his strong Cherokee family, he is proud of his heritage today.

In high school Jason spent hours in class drawing in his notebook. It is here that he discovered how much his ancestors were a part of him and his art.

1994, he designed logos for the organization formally known as "Mannahatta Arts Council" now known as "Redhawk Arts Council".

In 1995 to present, he often designs powwow t-shirts for such powwows like Gateway, The Nation, Bear Mountain, and Park Slope.

This February, Jason participated in AICH's Gallery/Musuem, "In the Mix" instillation. His painting "Welcoming with Open Arms", oil on canvas, was created through inspiration of a 40 foot tall totom pole that stood in the middle of the road in British Columbia welcoming people into town.

Jason states "I never cared to paint 'Native' art until my sisters got themselves involved".

For the last 15 years, Jason has created his art to reflect how proud he is to be Cherokee. Jason's sister Carese Gullo and mother Deborah Mullins are both on the roster.
